"Content and Consciousness Revisited"というデネットに関する論文集を読んだり読まなかったりしている。Felipe De Brigardの"What Was I Thinking? Dennett’s Content and Consciousness and the Reality of Propositional Attitudes"を読んでいて、「民間心理学（Folk psychology）」というものが話題となっているがおそらく"intentional stance"と同じものだと思う。「信念」「願望」といった語彙を含むこの民間心理学の有用性というのが話題になっていて、そういえば「自由」というものもこの語彙に含まれるのではないかと思い当たった。自由が"manifest image"＝"intentional stance"による説明に含まれているという話は" From Bacteria to Bach and Back"にもある。

自由が"manifest image"に含まれているということは、この概念が"intentional stance"というレベルでの人間の行動の予測に有用であることを意味している。そして"intentional stance"というモデルの対象物である自由に物理的な説明における役割を与える必要はない。物理法則という世界の見方の中に"manifest image"中に存在する自由を探すから、決定論と自由の対立のような議論が生じるのだ。
