今日も"Every Thing Must Go"を読んでいる。分析形而上学がいかにダメなのかということが語られているパートで、その批判は以下のようになっている。分析形而上学は直観を形而上学の基礎として、例えば原子論のような思考にたどり着くがそれは現代の物理学とはフィットしない。現代の物理学、つまりは量子力学では例えば量子もつれのような明らかに直観に反した現象が考えられている。ゆえに分析形而上学はもともとの分析哲学的なモチベーションを離れて科学を無視する内容となっているのである。確かにそうだと思うが、形而上学が必ずしも現行の科学と共存可能なものである必要があるわけではないだろう。LadymanとRossとしては、科学に即した形而上学は科学の成功によって擁護されうるが、そうでない形而上学を擁護してくれる理論的成功というものはない、という点が形而上学に科学に対する目配せを要求する根拠であるようだ。

With respect to Lowe’s second claim, it is enough to point out that even if naturalism depends on metaphysical assumptions, the naturalist can argue that the metaphysical assumptions in question are vindicated by the success of science, by contrast with the metaphysical assumptions on which autonomous metaphysics is based which are not vindicated by the success of metaphysics since it can claim no such success.
