デネットが"From Bacteria to Bach and Bach"で参照されていたPedro Domingosの "The Master Algorithm: How the Quest for the Ultimate Learning Machine Will Remake Our World"を読んでいる。機械学習の導入本で様々なアプローチが紹介されているようだ。第1章は"Machine-Learning Revolution"ということで社会に対する影響が解説される。その中で面白かったのが機械学習の利用を農業に例える下りだった。

Learning algorithms are the seeds, data is the soil, and the learned programs are the grown plants. The machine-learning expert is like a farmer, sowing the seeds, irrigating and fertilizing the soil, and keeping an eye on the health of the crop but otherwise staying out of the way.

機械学習は細部まで理解した上で設計されるAIではない。だから機械学習からの出力を待っているとき農作物の収穫を待つような気分になるのだろう。人工知能の技術を発展させていった結果産業が一周回って農業に戻ってくるのはかなり面白いと思う。
