セラーズの"Science, Perception, and Reality"の二つ目の論文"Being and Being Known"の後半部分"The Isomorphism of the Intellect and the Real"を読んでいた(二回目)。

セラーズ"Science, Perception, and Reality"の二つ目の論文"Being and Being Known"を読んでいる(二回目)。

The existence in the intellect of the word •triangular• as habitus is, to continue our exposition, grounded in the immaterial existence of the absolute nature triangular in the faculty of sense.
(Sellars, Wilfrid. Science, Perception, and Reality (Kindle の位置No.986-988). Ridgeview Publishing Digital. Kindle 版. )

The alternative I am recommending is to say that none of these words are present in the act of sense, for it does not belong to the intentional order. To which it can be added that the predicative word •white• doesn’t make sense apart from statement; •white and triangular thing•  presupposes •(this) thing is triangular•. Predicates cannot be in sense unless judgement is there also.
(Sellars, Wilfrid. Science, Perception, and Reality (Kindle の位置No.1088-1091). Ridgeview Publishing Digital. Kindle 版. )

今日もScience, Perception, and Realityの"Philosophy and the Scientific Image of Man"を読み返して見つけたところを書いておきたい。

Is there any alternative? As long as the ultimate constituents of the scientific image are particles forming ever more complex systems of particles, we are inevitably confronted by the above choice. But the scientific image is not yet complete; we have not yet penetrated all the secrets of nature. And if it should turn out that particles instead of being the primitive entities of the scientific image could be treated as singularities in a space-time continum which could be conceptually “cut up” without significant loss—in inorganic contexts, at least—into interacting particles, then we would not be confronted at the level of neurophysiology with the problem of understanding the relation of sensory consciousness (with its ultimate homogeneity) to systems of particles.
(Sellars, Wilfrid. Science, Perception, and Reality (Kindle の位置No.844-850). Ridgeview Publishing Digital. Kindle 版. )

Every Thing Must Go: Metaphysics Naturalized"で言っていたように物理学の対象がすでに粒子ではないなら、この点は解決されたことになる。

Thus the conceptual framework of persons is the framework in which we think of one another as sharing the community intentions which provide the ambience of principles and standards (above all, those which make meaningful discourse and rationality itself possible) within which we live our own individual lives.
(Sellars, Wilfrid. Science, Perception, and Reality (Kindle の位置No.900-903). Ridgeview Publishing Digital. Kindle 版. )

今日もScience, Perception, and Realityの"Philosophy and the Scientific Image of Man"をうろうろしていた。

Just as it is important not to confuse between the “character” and the “nature” of a person, that is to say, between an action’s being predictable with respect to evidence pertaining to prior action, and its being predictable no holds barred, so it is important not to confuse between an action’s being predictable and its being caused.
(Sellars, Wilfrid. Science, Perception, and Reality (Kindle の位置No.343-345). Ridgeview Publishing Digital. Kindle 版. )

Thus the behaviour of a burnt child with respect to the fire is predictable, but not an expression of character. If we use the phrase, ‘the nature of a person’, to sum up the predictabilities no holds barred pertaining to that person, then we must be careful not to equate the nature of a person with his character, although his character will be a “part” of his nature in the broad sense.
(Sellars, Wilfrid. Science, Perception, and Reality (Kindle の位置No.320-322). Ridgeview Publishing Digital. Kindle 版. )

To the extent that relationships between the truncated “persons” of the manifest framework were analogous to the causal relationships between persons, the category itself continued to be used, although pruned of its implications with respect to plans, purposes, and policies.
(Sellars, Wilfrid. Science, Perception, and Reality (Kindle の位置No.351-353). Ridgeview Publishing Digital. Kindle 版. )

For my present purposes, the most important contrasts are those between actions which are expressions of character and actions which are not expressions of character, on the one hand, and between habitual actions and deliberate actions, on the other.
(Sellars, Wilfrid. Science, Perception, and Reality (Kindle の位置No.306-307). Ridgeview Publishing Digital. Kindle 版. )

セラーズのScience, Perception, and Realityの"Being and Being Known"を読んだところあんまり意味がわからないので"Philosophy and the Scientific Image of Man"から読み返すことにした。

Thus, the conceptual framework which I am calling the manifest image is, in an appropriate sense, itself a scientific image. It is not only disciplined and critical; it also makes use of those aspects of scientific method which might be lumped together under the heading ‘correlational induction’.
(Sellars, Wilfrid. Science, Perception, and Reality (Kindle の位置No.209-211). Ridgeview Publishing Digital. Kindle 版. )

Every Thing Must Go: Metaphysics Naturalized"で展開されていたような科学的実在論を取る(つまりscientific imageの対象を実在物と考える)とmanifest imageの対象についても実在論を取ることになるだろう。

For we shall see that the essential dualism in the manifest image is not that between mind and body as substances, but between two radically different ways in which the human individual is related to the world.
(Sellars, Wilfrid. Science, Perception, and Reality (Kindle の位置No.296-298). Ridgeview Publishing Digital. Kindle 版. )

この辺りもDennett(そしてLedymanなど)が受け継いでいる点だと考えられるかもしれない。

"Every Thing Must Go: Metaphysics Naturalized"を読み終わった。

We have now said enough to be able to state informatively our version of a normative verifiability criterion: the science and metaphysics of a community of inquirers should remain silent about putative domains of inquiry from which the community is collectively informationally disconnected.
(James Ladyman and Don Ross with David Spurrett and John Collier "Every Thing Must Go: Metaphysics Naturalized" p309)

As discussed in Chapter 4, many perspectives are unoccupied, or occupied only by very stupid agents. (Increasingly many perspectives are occupied by information processors that are more powerful than humans or networks of humans; large computers open new informational channels (Humphreys 2004).)
(ibid p308)

2017/9/19

"Every Thing Must Go: Metaphysics Naturalized"の5章まで読み終わった。

Let us say that to the extent that a real pattern is fully measurable from many locators it has high indexical redundancy. This is not to be confused with informational redundancy (which undermines pattern reality) as invoked in the definition of a real pattern. The idea is that for patterns with high indexical redundancy, most measurements carry no new information about them to most measurers.
(James Ladyman and Don Ross with David Spurrett and John Collier "Every Thing Must Go: Metaphysics Naturalized" p295)
